Came across this pair of poor. neglected XR7s on my local craigslist.

White one’s description:
1996 Mercury Cougar XR7 – Performance Pearl White w/ Tan Interior - $3000
over 100,000 miles – V8 4.6L
Clean title with sale / Service was maintained meticulously when driven
- Needs new fuel pump (which I have) / put on exhaust (which I have) that was stock / needs new wire for speedometer.
- Engine ran strong / transmission and rear end were rebuilt approximately 5,000 miles prior to
taken off the road. Stock spoiler on rear.
- I have another set of rims with new tires mounted on it P225-60-16 matching sport rims
- No body damage, just needs to be cleaned up due to it sitting for a while
- Good solid car to clean up and restore to driving condition
- Will need to be towed to take home
Both ads end with “I don’t need help selling it. Leave your tel number and tell me a good time to reach you. All others will be ignored.”
So he wants a combined $5,000 for these two shitheaps. I think he’ll be lucky to get $5
00 for the pair.

They’re great cars, but completely worthless on resale. I bought one 10 years ago for $50. Tossed a battery in it and drove away. Fixed a couple things and then drove it from Florida to Minnesota. One of the coils failed on the way, so my V8 was a V6 from Tennessee to Minnesota.

Yeah. Even if they were cleaned up, necessary repairs done and had new tires put on, they’d still be worth about $600 each, at best.

That was not a good era for V8s from Ford.

The modular 2v 4.6 was a pretty reliable engine but it was a boat anchor for
power vs physical size and weight.

I like these, they look like absolute shit but with RWD and V8 there is fun to be had

Sure, as long as you drop a zero from the prices.

Of course, there’s always one with an issue and a high price:

I’d give $1,200 for the white one. It looks pretty. But that's top dollar and road ready.

Was commenting more on the model itself than the specimen advertised. That said my 406 had also been sitting on the dealer lot long enough to amass quite a bit of moss, admittedly not as much as these. A fresh battery and a hosedown later I had a perfectly functioning daily driver that I have yet to spend a cent on repairs.

Is it just me, or is quoting the exact brochure name for the paint colors under these circumstances basically the height of pretension ?

There is a guy in his 50's that lives somewhere in my general area and commutes to work in a green one of these in nearly pristine condition. I see him once or twice a week in the mornings. I can’t say that I want one of these, but I get a kick out of seeing a nice one on a regular basis.

I had a green ’94 Cougar just like that ’95... too bad mine didn’t have the V8. ( I later corrected that mistake with a ’96 Thunderbird.)

I’m almost bored enough to bug the guy about his idiotic pricing. Maybe tomorrow.

LOL... mega crack pipe.
Nice price at $200 and $300 respectively.

The early 4.6s has issues with spark plugs blowing out. This was corrected with the PI (performance improved) heads
